Katie Smrcka-Duffy Fudd, head coach at Potomac School and coach of the 2008 AAU National Championship Open Division Bronze medalist GTS Aces, has joined forces with the Matrix as a coach and skills trainer for the organization.
“The Matrix is ecstatic about joining forces with Coach Fudd,” said Matrix Executive Director Jim Butler.
Matrix President Liz Reed added,
"Adding Katie as a coach for a Matrix high school showcase team and as a skills trainer for our teams and our players is a huge asset for our growing AAU program and will help us transition with our current players and teams as they start high school.
Katie has an excellent record as an AAU coach in developing and showcasing high school players that have led to roughly 30 of her players receiving college scholarships. In addition, Coach Fudd is noted for her ability to develop players’ individual basketball skills across all age groups. She’s a great addition to the Matrix family."
On joining the Matrix, Coach Fudd stated,
" While I’ve had many opportunities over the years to become a part of other long-established AAU clubs in the area, I’m extremely excited to be joining the Matrix at this point in their program. I decided to join the Matrix as they are a quality program with quality people that are working hard to build their program.
In addition, the opportunity to lead the Matrix’s efforts to build its high school program was a real plus. I look forward to creating opportunities for Matrix players to develop the skills and experience they need at an elite level so that they can continue to play basketball after high school."
For the 2009 AAU season, Coach Fudd will be coaching a brand-new Matrix team for players with aspirations to play college basketball, which will compete in exposure tournaments throughout next spring and summer. More immediately, Coach Fudd will be leading the Matrix Fall Skills Clinics that start on Saturday, September 13.
Coach Fudd will also be available to work individually with Matrix players who want to engage her services as a private skills trainer. In addition, Coach Fudd will be available to work with Matrix teams as a team trainer to supplement the Matrix program’s focus on individual skills development.

Phil McConnell, long-time high school assistant coach, AAU coach and AAU leader, has joined the Matrix organization. Phil is a member of the Matrix Board of Directors and will join the Matrix coaching staff as a coach for the Spring 2009 AAU season.

"Not only will Phil be an outstanding addition to our coaching line-up, but his years of experience in running another Potomac Valley AAU girls’ basketball program will be a major asset to the Matrix as we continue to grow as an organization. Finally, Phil’s a basketball junkie with a huge coaching library – on paper, on disc and in his head – that will benefit all our Matrix coaches."
